..::What's in a Name?

If you could change your name right now to anything you wished, would you?
How would you choose a name?

Photobucket

Although I do love the story from which my name was chosen, I've often wished that my name was different due to the fact that it was a very popular name in the 80's. This resulted in me growing up and having several friends/frenemies with the same name as myself, which I am sure you can imagine is very frustrating when you are trying to carve out your own identity during adolescence. There is only one thing that results from being constantly surrounded by people who share your name: THE NICKNAME. Here's the tricky thing about nicknames - you NEVER have just one. Your family has one for you, your best friend(s) have one for you, your boyfriend has one for you, your high school friends, your college friends, your work friends....the list could go on forever. And then one day you wake up and realize that NO ONE calls you by your real name....

Okay so back to why I'm fascinated with names lately - how do you pick a name for something/someone? Currently this has been a theme in my life for two reasons. For starters my Seastar (my nickname for my sister) is having a baby (mini tangent - I'm SOOO EXCITED) and secondly if everything goes my way I'm hoping to launch a lil project this summer and I'm going to need a name - a business name. And scratch that it's not a lil project - it's MY LIFE. MY DREAM. HOW THE F-WORD DO YOU PUT A NAME ON YOUR DREAM?!?

I've been struggling with this for quite some time. In business, identity is everything. Being a graphic designer, among other things, I know how important a name and a strong logo are when it comes to your brand. So naturally I know that whatever I pick must be a strong representation of not only myself but also my designs. I'm going to have to live with this decision for the rest of my life (yes, the pressure is on.) And this is where we come full circle....maybe I just slap my name on it. After all I was named after Ralph Lauren so maybe its only fitting that my career if fashion continues down the same path...What do you think?

..::Love is Not About Bank Accounts

Photobucket

You know those moments in life when someone says something or does something for you and you realize how well they know you? My friend, Taylor of Shimmy Bang, posted this picture on my Facebook today and I had one of those moments. She knew I would like it and it made me happy to know that something that simple can still make my day. I'm constantly amazed by the small gestures that people make that can totally turn your day around. Maybe that's because our generation is soooo consumed with the bigger = better attitude. Its utterly depressing. What happened to the days of love notes, hand picked flowers, smiles, and long drives to nowhere? At the end of the day it doesn't matter how big your bank account is or how successful you are if you can't find happiness in the small things. I could care less about your bank account, its happiness I'm after.

SERIOUSLY?!???? Karl, you've done it again....not that I've ever doubted that you wouldn't do it for me. Of course I couldn't sleep last night after viewing these pictures - HELLO FABULOUS BOW TIE HAIR-DOs! I wonder if I can get my hair to do that....not that I didn't think about ways to do this while at work today ;) If I had one wish at this very moment (and curing the economic crisis wasn't an option) I'd wish to be in Paris sitting in the front row watching Karl's creations strut down the runway....and there I go dreaming again. Loving the metallic/pastel combos - who says sparkle has to end at the strike of midnight on New Year's Eve?

As a response to someone defining this collection as "futurism" Karl replied, "I don't believe in avant-garde clothes for a future that will never happen. Fashion is always now." (Style.com)

True story. Karl always tells it like it is, kinda like me and I LOVE IT.

There is nothing that cures the rainy day blues quite like online shopping. Okay, if I'm going to be honest, then I must tell you that I wasn't realllly shopping because that would be silly of me considering I did just buy that Marc Jacobs beauty in November. So in actuality I was online "browsing" and not shopping, but you know what it still did the trick. My rainy day blues were cured when I came across this gorgeous Miu Miu bag on Net-a-porter.com. I love this bag. I need this bag. This bag is the perfect color. Oh F-word, I'm in trouble now. I can't stop thinking how stunning this bag would look with my spring wardrobe. Well a girl can dream right? Speaking of dreams, I know I'll have plenty of good ones tonight after the Lakers beat the Wizards. Great job boys - I needed that win - it was my own silent victory.

After spending the majority of last week under water due to the massive five day rainstorm, I treated myself to a lil fun in the sun on Sunday by heading out to the Melrose Trading Post to scope out the crafts/vintage finds. It was a perfect LA morning - crisp and sunny - and of course I was enjoying a VERY large cup of coffee and the company of some of my fav people. While we were weaving in and out of the different booths, I spotted Emily of Cupcakes and Cashmere also checking out all the goods. (Click here to vote for her blog for Best Fashion Weblog). Later in the day I found myself enamored with this octopus ring that I happened upon and once I put it on, I just had to take it home with me. I also scooped up two necklaces, but more on those later.

P.S. I'm sporting "Domestic Goddess" on my nails this week in honor of all the spring cleaning I've been up to in the last few days.

..::Children in Grown Up's Clothing

Photobucket

Photobucket

Who said you have to grow up? After all aren't grown ups just complex children who still dare to dream of happy endings? What baffles me is the simple fact that when you are a child you dream of being a grown up. You spend your entire childhood playing games that portray the life of an adult. You play games that fictionalize your future husband/wife and the life that the two of you will have right down to what you will name your children. You play house and dress up and you make up what kind of job you will have, what kind of person you will become and yet one day you wake up to find that you are indeed grown. Does reality stack up to your dreams and if it doesn't or when it doesn't what do you do? When you get a flat tire or you don't pass an important test how do you deal with it? Where were the real life games that teach you how to handle those problems? We pretend to be grown ups, but what these games don't teach us is how to deal with real life, with real problems. The joy of playing pretend is that you don't have to deal with the shitty stuff of life, but the danger in that is the inability to react to problems. At some point the pretend life must end and we are left with the harsh reality that real life is much harder than the imaginary world we grew up fantasizing about. What happens when you wake up one day to find that a childhood of playing dress up doesn't turn you into a world class dancer, but rather turns into your full time job on the Vegas strip?

..::Time Machine

I've vowed not to leave my apt today in order to stay dry, warm and away from the storm raging outside my window. On the agenda today - a Audrey Hepburn Movie Marathon, catching up on some magazines, and a project or two. First up Breakfast at Tiffanys while I drink my coffee, then Funny Face while I flip through my stack of magazines, Sabrina will carry me through lunch, then I'll finish up the day with Paris When it Sizzles and Roman Holiday to get me in the mindset of staying warm while the storm continues on. These old movies always have me wishing I was born in another time. The time of glamours dresses for all occasions, the wonderful parties, the ornately decorated homes and hotels - its all so dreamy to me. Its all so far away now, but its comforting to know that whenever I want I can pop in an old black and white and take myself back to a time before my time.

...but just what I needed after today...

Day 6 of 8 straight, 12 hour work days. Needless to say I've fallen out of touch with my world aside from a few texts to the most important people in my life after their questioning my current status of alive or not. If I've ignored you, I'm sorry it wasn't intentional (or maybe it was.) I'll resurface sometime on Thursday once the last piece of clothing is merchandised and the last mannequin in place. Until then I need a new word for exhausted - any suggestions?

HIT

MISS

Despite my hellish work week that turned into a work weekend that still continues on until Thursday, I was happy that I got to catch the Golden Globes last night right as I walked in the door...there always is a silver lining ;) I did however miss the red carpet pre show, but that didn't stop me from spying the incredible (and not so incredible) fashions on display via DVR. Have I ever expressed how much I love my DVR? It really is the best, since I'm never home to catch things at their regularly scheduled showings. I was slightly disappointed in Chloe Sevigny's Valentino gown - waaaay to many ruffles, which do not flatter her at all. She looks like she had a loosing battle with a bolt of fabric. Kate Hudson did not dazzle in her Marchesa either which was another shocker. While I applaud her for her risk, I just don't love the dress - it feels cheesy to me especially with her sky high white pumps. I was also surprised to see that Christian Siriano designed such a monstrosity for Christina Hendricks. Perhaps in a different color and with smaller ruffles it could work, but that peachy color + too many ruffles = a haute mess with red hair. I could go on, but I have another 12 hour work day ahead tomorrow....Thursday couldn't come soon enough.

Love, love, loving Balmain RTW SS2010. The color palette is so simple with its army greens and shimmering golds yet so striking at the same time. If anyone could make a t-shirt full of holes look expensive its Christophe Decarnin. Lusting over this collection of army meets goddess that embodies the modern day hero I would love to be - tough girl by day, glamazon by night! I bet she plays dirty...
