You're Just Like my Ken and Barbie Doll

Gwen Stefani = a lil bit Barbie, a lil bit Rock-n-Roll and a whole lot of GLAM!
In the words of No Doubt "You're just like my Ken and Barbie Doll. You dress up, you play the game." Gotta love Gwenie - and I'm obsessed with her signature style. She's a lil bit Barbie and a lil bit Rock-n-Roll and don't even get me started on her adorable boys who I recently sat behind at a private No Doubt show in Las Vegas.

Barbie Fashion Show Fall 2009 "Everyone Needs a Ken!" and I NEED that tee!!!

The original Barbie Doll circa 1959 - designed by Ruth Handler and named for her daughter Barbara thus "Barbie" was born.

Barbie Fashion Show Fall 2009

However let me get back to my original thought.....Barbie as style icon. I began thinking the other day where my fashion sense came from...was it from being dragged around to store after store by my Mom, from watching her get dressed to go out or possibly from my Grandma and the collection of beautiful jewels she kept in her jewelry box hidden in her closet? Or was it from somewhere else, something unconscious? Then it hit me - the first toy I can remember playing with was my Mom's collection of Barbie Dolls.

The act of picking out their clothing, getting them ready for whatever imaginary gala or date they had for that day, and then reveling in the satisfaction of dressing them perfectly and lining them up to admire my work. This was my introduction to fashion, this is when the infatuation began - way back when I was all of 5 years old. I think this was also around the same time that I started to dress myself. This seemingly simple act soon became my favorite part of the day because even at five years old, nothing beats the satisfaction of someone telling you that you look good after you've carefully chosen each part of your ensemble. I can remember "collecting"and making clothes for my Barbie dolls - similarly I now see every purchase I make as an addition to my own collection. What are your favorite pieces from your collection?
